What happened to Kanye West? 🤷🏾♂️
And we review his new documentary ‘In Whose Name?’

Now, onto today’s episode — one that, in a way, has been in the making since I was 13. Like a lot of people, I’m a recovering Kanye fan. The first concert I ever went to was Kanye. His influence shaped my style, my taste in music, and even the movies I love. For a long time, he could do no wrong… until he did.
This week, we’re asking: what do you do when your favorite artist becomes a self-proclaimed N*zi? And we dive into the new documentary In Whose Name?, which claims to show Kanye in a new light. And over on Instagram, I’ll be sharing a reel about the time quoting Kanye got me suspended in high school (what happened to free speech?).
We also got a ton of responses to last week’s episode on statues. A few highlights:
Many of you sent us the new Tina Turner monument which is one of the scariest things I’ve ever seen.
Jennifer flagged the hideous Lucille Ball statue in Ball’s hometown of Celoron, New York, which was eventually replaced.
Kavya mentioned the Mary Wollstonecraft monument in London, which I hadn’t seen.
And Maya pointed us to the unforgettable bronze Melania Trump statue.

Thanks for this episode ... I thought it was one of your best. I used to be a pretty big Kanye fan but then went completely cold turkey before TLOP came out and have intentionally not listened to any of his music, even the old stuff, since then. It's interesting comparing him to an artist like Michael Jackson - I'll still hear MJ songs fairly regularly (still played at weddings, for instance) but Kanye is pretty much gone, as far as I've observed.
His first two albums came out at such a seminal time in my life, right when I was graduating from college and then moving back home and starting my first job. I was really unhappy and adrift and those albums provided the escape I was looking for. I listened to them CONSTANTLY. Now it's been 20+ years and I haven't reflected on that time in a long while. And I'd like to listen to the albums again, if only for nostalgia's sake, but I guess I feel bad about doing so.
