MJ having more global tour dates was the differentiator for me. I think he's way bigger than Taylor Swift - despite it being impossible to truly get apples to apples on this.
Blinding Lights is a streaming sensation, that's all. Not the most popular ever.
On further reflection, MJ was unavoidable in his day (which was kind of my day), Swift has been 99% avoidable (unless I guessed wrong about who was in that ad I saw, then 100%)
As I was listening, I was wondering how much the scandals/crimes associated with MJ affected his popularity at the time and his legacy and continued popularity. My family stopped listening after the child sex abuse allegations and trial, but maybe that was uncommon?
i'm sure you're not alone on that, a quick search shows his streams saw a dip after the Leaving Neverland doc a few years ago. I'd imagine with distance it essentially levels out (also: surely negative publicity can earn people some curiosity listens too...)

Thanks for having me!
I wish you had included a voting option for "I don't care". Neither of these people are part of my world.
